Fiberglass Pools, Frequently Asked Questions

Why do fiberglass pools cost more?
Fiberglass pools generally run $4-5K more than concrete (gunite) but has demonstrated an unlimited lifespan. The majority of customers select concrete pools to save money when in fact in 5 to 7 years that same concrete pool will need to be resurfaced at a price of $4-5K. If you think you can increase the price of your home by putting a pool in the yard and selling the house in 4 to 7 years, you will actually have additional cost to make pool look pristine.

Will the pool pop out of the ground?
Any pool, fiberglass or concrete, has the possibility of popping out of the ground if you empty the pool during rainy season or if the water tables in your area are high. This is why no fiberglass or concrete dealer will warranty a pool from lifting out of the ground without professionals assisting in the removal of the water. A fiberglass pool is very similar to a boat - it floats. Back during World War I and II they built concrete boats - they floated as well. Some pools are fitted with a Hydrostatic valve in the floor this balances the outside pressure against the inside pressure of the pool which prevents the pool from lifting. We at Deer Park Pools are not in the business of discrediting fiberglass or concrete pools. For more info Google "Do fiberglass pools pop out of the ground?" or "Do concrete pools pop out of the ground?"

What is the lifespan of a fiberglass pool?
Fiberglass pools are manufactured in a environmental controlled factory. Fiberglass is 17 times stronger than concrete and will flex 12 to 14 inches without cracking to accommodate earth movement. All fiberglass pools come with a 25 year to a Lifetime warranty on the shell. It is our experience when going to customers houses to repair concrete pools they do not always pop but they crack from the pressure of water under the pool.

Are fiberglass pools chemical resistant?
Yes. Fiberglass can withstand any chemical. This is why gas stations are replacing underground fuel tanks with fiberglass shells. Concrete pools, on the other hand, are not chemical resistant. Therefore the process of adding chemicals is constantly eating away at the surface, proving the more chemicals you add the sooner the pool needs to be resurfaced.

How much maintenance is involved with having a pool?
Fiberglass pools have a smooth, non-porous surface giving algae less places to grow. The gel coat finish enables the pools to be stain resistant, therefore less chemicals are needed and makes cleaning the pool much easier and cheaper. Comparing fiberglass to concrete, fiberglass requires up to 66% less the cost of chemicals and electricity. A concrete surface alters the waters chemical balance which uses more acid and chlorine to counter balance the chemical reaction. Fiberglass pools are smooth and safe unlike other materials fiberglass is not abrasive there are no sharp or dangerous edges.
